Projet GUES

S’intéressant à toutes sortes de problématiques reliées à l’éducation telles qu’à des pratiques pédagogiques novatrices, mais aussi à des sujets comme l’intimidation, nous avons souhaité nous entretenir avec Marilyn Lapointe et Guylaine Laflamme du Projet GUES, un programme de prévention en matière d’exploitation sexuelle chez les jeunes. 581852_369526553193578_14320430_nAu cours de ce podcast, elles ont discuté de comment cette problématique affecte nombre d’enfants et d’adolescents, et ce, de plus en plus de manières différentes avec les nouvelles technologies. Elles nous ont parlé de leur travail avec les jeunes tout en donnant plusieurs conseils aux parents et aux éducateurs pour aborder ce sujet controversé avec des jeunes et pour aider à la prévention de l’exploitation sexuelle. Nikhil Goyal on education, bullying, his books…

In this 15-minute interview, Nikhil Goyal, a 19 year-old journalist and author, told us about how his opinions on education have evolved since publishing his first book on the topic, One Size Does Not Fit All, at the age of 17. We also talked about bullying, the school-prison comparison and the subject of his upcoming book.

L’éducation à domicile avec Christine Brabant

Dans cette entrevue, Christine Brabant, professeure et chercheure en éducation à l’Université de Montréal se spécialisant en éducation à domicile, s’est entretenue avec nous sur le sujet. Nous avons notamment discuté des bénéfices de l’éducation à domicile, des préjugés associés à ce type d’éducation, de la recherche sur le sujet, d’unschooling et de ce qu’elle suggèrerait qui soit changé par rapport à la gestion de l’éducation à domicile par le gouvernement du Québec. Christine Brabant est également l’auteure du livre L’école à la maison au Québec.

Dorna Lange on visiting over 50 alternative schools

In this podcast, we interviewed Dorna Lange. She told us about what motivated her as a teacher to visit over 50 alternative schools, including many democratic schools, Montessori schools, Waldorf schools, Reggio Emilia schools, over the past three years on two different continents. She told us about what she learned along the way and about what it was like to apply for a teaching position in a school where students vote to decide on every new hire. Carlo Ricci on Research and The Journal of Unschooling and Alternative Learning

We had the chance to interview Carlo Ricci, professor and researcher in the field of education at Nipissing University in Canada, about the journal that he founded, the Journal of Unschooling and Alternative Learning (JUAL). He also told about what we should keep in mind when we hear about studies in education in general and about unschooling, homeschooling and democratic schooling. He also talked about how conventional schools are co-opting some of the concepts traditionally used in self-directed learning environments and how to deal with this issue.

Projet d’école participative communautaire Des Saules Rieurs

Qu’est-ce qu’une école participative communautaire? Comment une école peut-elle impliquer les parents et utiliser le quartier et le plein-air comme outils tant pour enseigner qu’engager les enfants dans leur communauté? Deux jumeaux fonctionnent-ils toujours aussi bien l’un que l’autre dans la même école? Ce sont des questions auxquelles répondent Joanne Bonnici et Mélanie Paré, deux membres du projet d’école Des Saules Rieurs à Verdun-LaSalle, notamment en tirant des exemples d’un projet  scolaire effectué dans le cadre d’une fête d’Halloween municipale et en s’appuyant sur des études tirées du livre Playdoyer pour une école communautaire.

Jerry Mintz on the AERO Conference, Democratic Assemblies and School Shootings

We were very happy to have the chance to interview Jerry Mintz, the director of AERO (Alternative Education Ressource Organization). We asked him about what is in the works for the upcoming AERO conference and about AERO’s 25th anniversary. Jerry shared some stories that illustrate how democratic assemblies can be beneficial in a learning setting and we talked about the unfortunate and too-frequent school shootings that took place in 2014.

Two Teens on Experiencing Self-Directed Learning at Compass

Can an education based on self-directed learning help teens to improve their relationship with their parents, their desire to learn and their level of happiness? Can frustration experienced in conventional schools lead to drug addiction? These are examples of topics addressed by Willow Johnson and Caleb Gray, two teens that go to Compass, a centre for self-directed learning, after having spent most of their life in conventional schools.
